How can Items sell for a Penny?

Many ebay sellers start auctions at one penny to attract bids and keep costs down. A proportion of these auctions, for many different reasons, dip under the radar and remain unsold!
Many items start at 1p and whereas some weeks they will take off with multiple bids, in other weeks an identical item can stay at a penny.

Strange but True!!

In the past, some sellers used to sell items at a penny and charge huge shipping costs, over and above the true postage and handling costs. to make a profit with the postal charges. They did this to avoid eBay fees, because fees aren't charged on postage. Ebay got wise to this and started to crack down on people doing this and even stipulating free shipping in some categories, like DVDs. Great news for ebay buyers!

  • Investment advice
Hi Guys, I am looking for some advice on how to use funds of around 10k to make a good return. I currently have money in an investment which should pay out a fixed 30% return within one year, however, i am looking to distribute money and perhaps invest elsewhere, maybe just invest a few grand here and there. I am interested in buying shares as well as other investment schemes, and i am just wondering what you would advice? Financially i am very stable and this 10k is purely for investing at this time- however, i would rather not get involved in high risk investments. what is the best way of using this money to build up my investment portfolio and ensure a good return over a varied time scale(preferably i want a short term for the majority of the money, but i dont mind tying a few grand up for longer if need be)- i also like the idea of owning shares that i can quickly sell if need be. I appreciate any advice CR

  • Investment Insider: Beware flotations at 'wonderful' prices
]]> A recent survey conducted among Motley Fool users ahead of the Facebook listing revealed that investors with less than one year's investing experience were twice as likely to invest in the flotation of Facebook as investors with more than 20 years of know-how under their belt.
  • Technology stocks: Time to party like it's 1999?
]]> Technology investment is back with a bang. Facebook's float is just the latest in what is a lengthening line of exciting companies coming to market at what seem huge valuations. Investors, it seems, are being asked to party like it's 1999 all over again, back when everything technology glittered.
  • Brits in stampede to snap up euros as pound soars
Currency exchanges have seen a surge in Brits buying euros as the pound rises to a three-and-a-half-year high against the single currency. Travelex for instance has seen online sales of the euro rise by 290 per cent year-on-year since the latest round of eurozone turmoil.
  • Derek Pain: Perversely, many small caps are still left out in the cold
Earlier this year there were high hopes that the persecution of small caps was coming to an end. There was a sudden outbreak of enthusiasm and the stock market undercard looked more lively than it had for a long time.
  • Money Insider: Personal loans - to pay less, just borrow more
]]> If you're seeking finance to help with the cost of your home improvements or perhaps to change thefamily car, a personal loan from your bank or building society is often the first port of call.
  • The Bargain Hunter: Wine and clothes in huge M&S sale
Marks & Spencer is in the midst of a huge in-store and online sale, with discounts available at over 450 stores, including 150 M&S Simply Foods.
  • Simon Read: Don't panic about the euro crisis but do take stock of savings
Finances have hit the news headlines again this week as the continuing euro crisis sent shock waves across stock markets and served as a sharp reminder of the tough times of the disastrous banking collapses of 2008.
  • Donald MacInnes: There are worse jobs than being a sport-orientated peacemaker
Yes, I know I promised I would deliver an answer this week to the ongoing tension in the West Bank (in three easy steps including a cross-border badminton round robin), but events have conspired to render this unlikely. After my comments last week about the survival or otherwise of a certain football team in Glasgow, I received quite a few emails calling me bad names and questioning my personal development.
  • Questions Of Cash: Left in tears by wrangle over medical bills
    Q. I went to a medical centre in August last year with varicose veins. Although my vein was pumping blood the wrong way, I was told that an operation to treat it was no longer available through the NHS.
  • Mark Dampier: China domestic focus has not reduced the potential
]]> I recently spent five days in China with the renowned fund manager Anthony Bolton. We went to three major cities, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, visiting 18 companies most of which he owns in his Fidelity China Special Situations Trust. It was a most insightful trip, which highlighted both the opportunities and the risks of investing in China.
  • Energy bills 140 per cent higher than in 2004
The cost of energy is climbing five times faster than household incomes, figures show. Earnings have typically risen by 20 per cent since 2004, but average home energy bills soared by 140 per cent.
  • Government accused of abandoning poor families by slashing fuel poverty spending
The Government has been accused of turning its back on hard-up families by slashing spending on fuel poverty.
  • Be prepared for the job axe to fall
Whichever way you slice it, the outlook for employment is getting bleaker. Last week the Centre for Economics and Business Research said that the long-standing official prediction for joblessness was way short of the mark and that by 2016, we could see three million-plus out of work. A gloomy prospect indeed but if you have a financial safety net in place, you and your family can prepare for the worst.
  • Payday lenders 'failing to properly record borrowers' credit history'
The payday lending industry has been accused of not making enough checks to ensure it is lending responsibly. Credit reference agency Equifax has issued an alert that some payday lenders are failing to record all their lending transactions. This means that when other lenders come to check the credit files of applicants they may not be seeing all clients' borrowings.
  • Brits put baby plans on hold as confidence dips
Four in 10 couples have shelved plans to start a family because they can't afford it, according to research from the Skipton Building Society.
  • Wealth Check: 'How can we put a bit aside to enjoy luxuries?'
    The patient
  • Keep cool in the heat of an auction and bag a bargain
The auction rooms are again abuzz with activity, with the industry monitor the Essential Information Group reporting a 12 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of lots coming under the hammer. Normally busy auction rooms are a sign of ill times in the property market – desperate sellers and bargain-hungry cash buyers meeting. This time around, though, the story is more complex.
  • Julian Knight: Drop in storecard use proves public is credit savvy
There is an attitude in this country that consumers are perennial victims, unable to make correct decisions and forever being hoodwinked by clever marketeers. Take the select committee discussions on payday lending, for instance, which possessed no understanding of the fundamental point that if there wasn't a demand for short-term lending it wouldn't exist.
  • Revolt: Join in the shareholder spring
]]> It may not be the storming of the Winter Palace but there is a whiff of revolution in the air. Boards of some of the UK's biggest companies, used to having their bumper bonuses and pay awards simply nodded through at their company's annual meetings, have been rocked by shareholder revolts. The bosses of failing companies, and even some seemingly well-run companies, are being called to task about the pay they award themselves.

  • Ben Yearsley: High-risk, but BlackRock could prove a gold mine
The reining-in of bank lending over the last few years has led to some interesting opportunities in unexpected areas. Prior to the global financial crisis banks happily leant to all and sundry at low interest rates, leveraging balance sheets to ridiculouslevels. However, intent on rebuilding capital, banks are now taking the opposite attitude, refusing to lend on anything other than stringent terms to extremely well-capitalised companies for low-risk projects. This has affected all kinds of sectors, and innovative fund managers could be well placed to capitalise.

  • Donald MacInnes: Why I wouldn't cry if my former team Rangers went under
I don't understand the complex economic narrative unfolding in my home city, whereby Glasgow Rangers football club fights for its life after years of financial stewardship which can only be described as "Greek". As words like "broke", "soup kitchen" and "jail" get bandied around, with me being a former Rangers fan, you'd think I would spend my days crying at the kitchen table. But this will never happen. Why? Because we don't have a kitchen table. And as I allow that revelation to sink into your conscious minds, like a welly in a swamp, I should probably explain why I am a "former" fan.

  • UK funds: A home win is not guaranteed
]]> The adage "there's no place like home" is one used in many walks of life, but it can also be applied to lots of people when it comes to investing. • Donald MacInnes: It's not asking for the Moon if you get paid in old newspapers
Excuse my beginning with such a personal question, but are you worth your salary? You certainly don't need to answer, but I only ask because of two things which happened this week. The first was that, due to a piece I wrote a few weeks ago bemoaning the lack of spending on the US space programme, I was offered the chance to interview an actual Apollo astronaut; someone who has walked on the Moon.
